Hello 2016!

Kids Running Sideways1

I love New Year’s Eve! The last day of the old year looks backwards and forwards at the same time. It celebrates the past year, and dreams about the year to come. Christmas may be over, but we’re all about to get a truly magical present: an entire year, brimful with possibility. Hello 2016! It’s like a new notebook. Who knows what amazing stuff you could write in its pages?

Yesterday I got to meet up with some very dear writing friends I hadn’t seen for far too long. We ate a lot, talked even more, laughed loads, took tons of photos and shared plenty of hugs. For me, it was the perfect way to end 2015.

Today is special too, because on this New Year’s Eve I can look forward to 2016 by writing my first ever blog post for Girls Heart Books. I’m also just about to finish the first book in a new fantasy series which will be published by Nosy Crow in 2016. So my New Year is beginning with brand new writing adventures.

I like to try to learn something new each year. Drawing and writing are part of the same process for me. I’ve always drawn my characters or scenes from my books as I write them. I want to use art even more as part of the writing process, so in 2016 I’m going to try to learn how to draw digitally.

Swift first wacom sketchThe picture at the top of the blog is a traditional drawing of Charlie and Tobias from my first book: Castle of Shadows. Here is my very first digital drawing: a sketch of one of my characters. I’ve still got a lot of practicing to do before I can control a digital pencil as well as a real one, but this first attempt was huge fun to do, and I think I will enjoy the challenge of learning how to create art electronically.

Wishing everyone a New Year full of the magic of possibility. What new thing would you like to try in 2016?

  1. Hi Ellen!

I hope you, and EVERYONE on GHB has a FAB 2016!!! =D My new thing in 2016, is to finish my new story about a girl who has powers of invisibility and has no idea who her mom and dad are, plus, she has to find her cousin, who has powers of healing. πŸ˜€

    HAPPY NEW YEAR!! πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€

  2. Happy New Year, Ellen.
Lovely to see you on Girls Heart Books. Learning how to draw digitally sounds brilliant. Are you having proper lessons or teaching yourself?

    • Hi Rachel! So great to see you here too. I’m teaching myself, sort of. I can see this becoming a major displacement activity when the words aren’t flowing! πŸ˜‰
Happy new year and good writing!

  3. Hi there Ellen! As I was reading the forth paragraph, I was O.M.G!! πŸ˜€ It’s just I felt like I’m reading what exactly has been going on in my mind for the last few months and I am about to do this year! Like really DO it for real – since I have this acute problem of procrastinating which I’m not proud of 😦 Anyway, so I am, too, into art and writing. 2016 has to be my year of act..so I’m committed to dedicate my time for both digital drawing and writing…I’m thinking of combining both and came up with idea of blogging on both work.

Your illustration above are nice! I like the style. Please keep writing and drawing! Oh..and reading too, of course πŸ˜€ Happy new year!!
