I reckon the best present for anyone is a tool kit (unless they’ve already got one!)
Here’s why: when my daughter asked if we could make a fairy house I was gobsmacked. She was seven, a total tomboy and hated anything ‘girly’.
I thought she was thinking: cardboard boxes, sticky tape, some bits of cloth – or whatever.
Nope. She was thinking: wood, hammer, nails and a saw.
Now look, I’m not that brilliant at DIY and was a tad wary about letting her loose with a full size hammer and a sharp saw. But we dug out some bits of wood from the back of the garage, sawed them into shape and then we thumped them together with nails. And then we painted it.
OK, I’ll be the first to admit it’s pretty modest. It’s a bit wonky and the doors and windows don’t even open – but the roof comes off! Impressive, huh!
Here it is now, decorated ready for Christmas.
All of which explains why NIXIE THE BAD BAD FAIRY is better at DIY than she is with magic, and why she keeps her magic wand down one boot and her trusty spanner in the other, has a complete tool kit and her very own workshop!
So, if you haven’t got a tool kit, put one on your Christmas list!
And – if it’s a bit daunting to make a whole fairy house – maybe you could start with a door!
NIXIE WONKY WINTER WONDERLAND – out now.
