Witchy Wednesday

Who are your favourite witches in literature? Here are just a few of mine (not counting, of course, any of the characters in my own books):

1. Hermione Grainger. Oh, Hermione! Are there any geeky girls out there who didn’t empathize with Hermione when they read the Harry Potter books? I’m sure there must have been…but oh, I felt recognition resonate all through my bones. I WAS Hermione in school (bushy brown hair, glasses, know-it-all attitude and all), only without the magical powers. I love Hermione! I love that she’s smart and she knows it, and by the end of the series, she’s got both a boyfriend and a best friend who admire her deeply for her intelligence and her idealism, even though those traits have sometimes made life awkward for her. Hermione is AWESOME.

2. Minerva McGonagall – well, obviously. Who wouldn’t want to grow up to be her??? (My favourite moment in the movie versions of the books: that bit in the final movie, when she starts the epic spell, at the moment of apocalyptic doom, to make the castle itself attack the invaders, and she rubs her hands together and chortles as she says: “I’ve always wanted to try this one!”)

3. Tiffany Aching – who learns that being a witch is really about learning to think twice and even three times before accepting any “obvious” truth…that her job is not to use her powers to impress people but to use her powers to protect people, whether or not they actually deserve it…and who finds true love NOT with the local version of a prince but with a sweet, geeky guy who’s so much better for her.

What about you guys? Who would you add to the list?

  1. Hi Steph,

I’m SO GLAD you said Hermione! My Nickname use to be Hermione! 😀

I was going to say Milly from Worst Witch but Luisa has already said it. 😀 Milly and Maud from Worst Witch. They and Miss Hardbroom too. 😀 She’s the Deputy head Mistress of Cackles Academy. HB has a though outer-shell, but she has a nice heart. 🙂

  2. Belladonna from Which Witch by Eva Ibbotson
Sophie Hatter from Howl’s Moving Castle by Diana Wynn Jones
Maya Wetherspoon from Mercedes Lackey’s Serpent’s Shadow
And pretty much everyone from Tamora Pierce’s Magic Circle series.
I could keep going, but I’ll stop.
