Never Give Up!

Hooray, I did it! Last week I was celebrating with champagne because I did an amazing thing. Well, it was amazing to me because I never ever thought I’d be able to do it. I passed my driving test. Now I know that lots of people have passed their test, many of them first time, so you probably think this isn’t a big deal. But this was my 17th test and I can tell you it was a very big deal to me. I never thought I’d get rid of those L plates.

Learning to drive has been a long and expensive process for me. There are times when I’ve given up for a while but I’ve always gone back and tried again because it’s something I really wanted to do. There’s lots of reasons why I’ve failed. I’m really nervous and do stupid things like zooming through red lights and going around an island the wrong way. On one test I tried to get into the wrong car then drove off with my hangbag hanging out of the door, turned out of the test centre and drove straight through the red lights at roadworks and right into oncoming traffic. My examiner had to take control of the car before I killed us both. I gave up for a few years after that test.

But then I decided to try again. And I kept on trying and now here I am with a pink licence! The next step is finding my way around as I am always getting lost but a satnav has been ordered.

So if there’s something you really want to do but are struggling to succeed, never give up. Carry on trying, no matter how long it takes and one day you’ll get there. Just like me! 🙂

  1. Well done.Though, it did make me laugh. Thinking of you zooming into on-coming traffic with your handbag hanging out of the door. It’s like a scene from a sitcom 🙂

    • Oh, Sarah, it got even worse than that. It was so bad I was expecting someone to pop up in the back seat and say “Smile, you’re on Candid Camera!”

  2. Congratulations and thank you so much for sharing. I have tried (& not passed!) over 10 times. Gave up years ago & was thinking of starting again – you have inspired me!

    • Go for it, Anne. You’ll get there in the end and be so pleased that you did. Don’t think about how much it costs or how many tests you’ve had, just keep your goal in mind and keep trying. Good luck!

  3. I had a really cute driving instructor who played in a band when I was in my twenties and couldn’t pass (despite 5 tries) until he went off to Europe with his band and I got given a more ‘normal’ sort of instructor. The first test I took after he left I passed and the tester said he couldn’t understand why I hadn’t done so before LOL !?!

  4. I’m SO delighted for you, Karen. I think everyone should learn to drive; it’s such a liberating thing to be able to do. Well done you for persevering – do you remember Maureen on the programme Driving School from years back? I think it took her something like 17 attempts too, but she did it in the end – and everyone who watched that programme was SO happy for her!

    • Thanks, Jo. Yes I do remember Maureen. In fact somone suggested that I went on the programme too! So glad I’ve finally done it. Now I just need to find my way around. 🙂
