How do you feel when your favourite books get made into movies? Sometimes it’s great, right? Seeing the characters you love come to life on the screen. But only if they’ve done it right. And not deviated away from the plot. If anything is going to make my head explode with crossness, it’s when they change the ending of a book to make it more ‘Hollywood’. My other rule is that I need to read the book before I see the film. I like the chance to create my own mental pictures of the characters and the scenery before a director does it for me. Plus, you often know loads of stuff that gets missed out of the film.
Here are my favourite novels-made-into-films:
1. The Hunger Games: I loved this book so much I was seriously apprehensive about seeing the film. But the film was fantastic, and pretty true to the original story, I think. Plus, I love Jennifer Lawrence, which helped (I’m going to be blogging about her in the future, so stay tuned).
2. The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants: I’ve blogged before about how much I love this book, it’s one of my favourites. Again, I think they did pretty well well with the film, although it was nowhere near (in my opinion) as good as the novel. Seeing this film always makes me want to go back to Greece.
3. Harry Potter: Now the books are fantastic. And obviously because they were so huge, there was a lot of stuff that got missed out of the films. But oh my goodness how astonishing are those special effects? Hands up who wanted to go to Hogwarts after seeing this? *holds hand high in air*. The only problem is that now when I read them, I picture the characters from the films. ( I am so desperate to do the Harry Potter studio tour it’s unreal. I have dropped several hints to my husband, but so far, no luck.)
So now you can go and watch them – but make sure you read the books first!
What about you? Which novels did you enjoy that got made into films? And which books did you love, but were made into a film you hated? I’d love to know!
