Hooray Hooray It’s World Book Day!

Here’s wishing that you have a fantastic day and use your free book token to get a cool read.
One of the great events this year is the StoryCraft writing competition. Check out the World Book Day Website for the details!
I have to confess that there is one thing that I don’t like about World Book Day. The bit that I’m not keen on is when some schools just have a ‘come dressed up in your favourite book character’ as their World Book day Event.
Don’t get me wrong I think dressing up is fun but my heart sinks when I see the procession of princesses, Spidermen and other various Disney characters. I also know that some Mums will have been under pressure to buy these outfits when they really can’t afford it. What do you think?
As it is world book day I would like to mention a book written by my friend Robtel Neajai Pailey and illustrated by Chase Walker for the children of Liberia in West Africa. It is called GBAGBA.
Gbagba is a Bassa term roughly meaning corruption. Liberia is emerging from a terrible and brutal civil war. One of the problems that it faces as it tries to rebuild is that of corruption. Robtel has written the book because she wants children to raise the question and take a lead.
Please share all the creative things that you know are happening today!

I’m dressing up as Katniss from the Hunger Games! I finished the first book last night and am now desperate for the next one! It’s. amazing!!
Brilliant idea! Have a great day!
I dressed up as Katniss too. ;D
Happy World Book Day! Last year at school,we had book dominoes. Some teachers got all the encyclopaedias they could find, and lined them up. The person at the end pushed, and the books all fell over around our school hall.Everyone got to see it happen twice. It was really cool.
I have never heard of book dominoes before. I bet it looked (and sounded!) amazing
Happy world book day!Three year ago we had book week in September or October and at the last day we were dressing up as some charatcers and I dressed up as the puddle man.Only three people won-and I was one of them!I was so happy and I got a whsmith voucher(but I couldn’t reed well back then).then the next year we had bookweek again in February and I had just started liking books(the according to humphery series) but we didn’t dress up.: ( We did meet Ann Marie Conway though-and I got a signed copy of polly plays her part(and later I got her other books). And now I like reading much more!Last year we didn’t have world book day or bookweek-we just got the voucher about a month late! This year my teacher is making a huge effort(he’s the head of literacy) and we have treasure hunts and stuff. And dressing up too-I am burglar Bill!I have the baby in the box with holes and everything.Hope I win a prize. Will comment later!
P.s He also showed us this video:
Its really good,isn’t it?
Here’s hoping Burglar Bill wins a prize. You should show your teacher your comment today. you have explained brilliantly just how important it is to organise fun literacy events. maybe your teacher will do this more often to make reading fun!!
Thanks. It didn’t win though, somebody else dressed as him and won.
I will.Thank you!
P.s did you like the song?
Omg that was the biggest comment I have ever done on GBH!
Sorry your Burglar Bill didn’t win. You was robbed!!! Song is great
Thank you.I diffidently was-However,my brother won a prize for an umpa lompa and we had I treasure chest-and I won horray!I got holes by Louis Sacher.
We had Joseph Delaney (author of the spooks series) come to our school today. It’s really cool because he’s kind of local to our area and included our city in his books, under a different name. I can’t wait to read his books!
I love reading a series of books. Maybe you and your friends could go on a Spooks walk in your city to all the locations
OMG!!! So jealous, I love the Spook’s series. You are lucky.
Lynda, someone at the BBC website agrees with you! http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-21687507 my daught wanted to go as a Disney princess but I refused to let her go in a Disney outfit because it wasn’t from a proper book. She went as Sam I Am from Green Eggs and Ham instewd
(though the costume did end up costing me more than a princess outfit and took three hours to make…so not sure I actually gained anything except pride there!)
I dressed up as the white queen from Tim Burtons Alice in Wonderland. My friend dressed up as Katniss from the hunger games but I think I’m a bigger fan than her!
